We recently interviewed our hairstylist Kim so you can get to know her better. She has been a hairstylist and color artist for Jessica’s Color Room for 14 years and has worked in the industry for over 25! Kim is a fantastic listener, so when clients sit in her chair, she uses this skill to create her clients' vision for their hair.
1. How did you get started in the hairstyling industry?
I went to Vinal Tech in Middletown for hairdressing and cosmetology. Once I graduated from that program, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in business from Southern CT State University. I worked at Cost Cutters during college and fell in love with working on people’s hair.
2. What made you choose hairdressing as a career?
While I was exploring the various programs at Vinal Tech, I found hairdressing to be the most interesting one. My older sister had also attended Vinal Tech for hairdressing and cosmetology, so she inspired me to do the same.
3. What are you known for at the salon?
People at the salon say I am known for my listening abilities. I like to listen attentively to people and what they want for their hair. Of course, if they ask my opinion, I am happy to give it to them.
They also say that I am good at keeping the integrity of people’s hair. I do enjoy applying natural coloring to my client’s hair instead of fashion colors. I like natural-looking highlights with foil, which I would say is my strong suit. So, if I had to say what I am known for, it would be foil highlights, blow-outs, and perms.
4. What’s your proudest professional accomplishment?
I am proudest of being an educator at the salon. I love to share my knowledge with new stylists and then see them apply it to their customers. I have a layered cut called the “Kim” haircut that’s become my own. Over the years, I’ve worked to perfect this layered look which I can do on both short and long hair.
5. How do you build relationships with your clients?
Because I listen attentively to what my clients ask for in terms of their hair, I can execute the look they want to achieve.
6. What is your favorite hair trend right now?
My favorite hair trend right now is beachy waves. I also love Halo extensions because they can give my clients naturally longer, thicker hair.
7. What inspires you most about working for Jessica’s Color Room?
I love the teamwork at the salon and the growth and positive change it has experienced over the 14 years I have been with the salon.
8. What do you like to do in your free time?
I spend time with my three girls, ages 8, 10, and 12. My oldest daughter has autism, so I have enjoyed supporting Autism Speaks in any way. Also, I am typically the one at the salon who cuts or styles the hair of special needs people. Having the experience to make their experience pleasant is valuable, and I enjoy helping in this way.
